Exploring the Power of AI in Education: My Experience in the Google AI+ for Education Fellowship

Natalia Pinelli

English Teacher & Kindergarten Coordinator

I had the privilege of participating in the Google AI+ for Education Fellowship, a program that brought together educators from all over the world to explore the transformative power of artificial intelligence in the classroom. I was honored to be one of only three educators from Argentina selected to be part of this incredible global initiative.

The fellowship consisted of eight sessions: seven of them online, and the final one—a truly unforgettable experience—was held in person during a Showcase event in New York City. Throughout the program, each participant was encouraged to identify a real challenge they faced in their teaching practice and to explore how AI tools could help address it.

As an English teacher, I decided to focus on enhancing the learning experience in our Ticket to Write class. Like many teachers, I often feel that no matter how much I plan, time is never enough. I wanted to make my classroom more dynamic, personalized, and truly aligned with each student’s needs.

That’s where AI came in.

Using Gemini, I designed personalized lesson plans based on our school’s curriculum, and then transformed those ideas into engaging teaching materials with Google Docs and Slides. I created a vibrant learning space on Google Classroom, where students could access activities tailored to their needs, participate in challenges, and collaborate with their peers.

As my students progressed, I used Notebook LM to analyze their written work. I discovered trends and patterns—many of them needed support in building stronger characters and maintaining solid story structures. With that insight, I generated ideas and suggestions using Gems, which helped students develop their writing further and tackle their weak points with confidence.

The results were powerful.
Students showed a 24% improvement in character development and a 30% improvement in story structure in only three lessons. But beyond the numbers, what moved me the most was their growing confidence and excitement towards writing. They now approach their pieces with curiosity and joy—and the classroom atmosphere has become more creative and supportive than ever.

The final session in New York was the perfect closing to this journey. We had the chance to present our projects to Googlers, engage in meaningful conversations, and exchange ideas with passionate educators from all corners of the world.

I also want to thank Colegio Michael Ham, a school that truly values innovation and professional development. Their ongoing support and encouragement played a key role in this experience. They are always seeking new ways to empower their teachers and ensure the highest quality education for their students.

What this experience taught me is that AI doesn’t replace teachers—it empowers them. It gives us back time, offers insights we might miss, and allows us to focus on what truly matters: building meaningful connections with our students and helping them thrive.
